pl. prax·es (prăk′sēz′)

  1. Practical application or exercise of a branch of learning.
  2. Habitual or established practice; custom.

“Often, however, programs that include community-based learning find it difficult to build reflectivepractices that can move students beyond volunteerism to examined engagement. Community-based learning appeals to many students; as aspiring activists, they want to ‘help’ or ‘do.’ However, there are dangers inherent in this kind of service activity if it does not include carefully planned reflective activities…In order to capitalize on the power of this interaction between experiences in the community and theories studied in the classroom, thoughtful reflection is an essential part of the dynamic. Reflection and praxis are necessary elements to transform community-based field experiences from simple volunteer activities into deeper learning.”

Past experience in organizing and directing events taught me that executing without exercising wisdom, level-headedness, or researching can further derail a situation more than it will aid it. In terms of helping a community of people, often times the development of visions, actions, cultural context, and needs take place without their involvement or consideration. How can we know what a community needs if we don’t first ask the community itself?

#SetTheDay2017 is still, very much, in motion.

Everyday when I leave work, I observe the strengths and deficiencies of the area around me.  Not a day goes by where I am not asking for wisdom or seeking the advice of the elders. I have a universe of questions circulating in my mind, but I know God guided me (and is still leading me) to the right people. Together as a team, we are implementing the praxis of community engagement.  We are merging with community itself, connecting with others, and ambitiously seeking ways to refine our plans for Set The Day before we continue our financial endeavors. This way, we tailor the event to the needs of the community instead of basing it on our own assumptions of what those needs may entail.

Praxis makes perfect.

Rise up. Set The Day.
